Funeral services for Amerest Terrell Gerrell, 85, of the Fairview Community, Demorest, were held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at Return Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth McEntire officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Gerrell went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.

Born May 1, 1927, in White County, he was a son of the late John Singleton and Anner Lou Nelms Gerrell. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Candis Marshalene Fortenberry Gerrell; brothers, E.C. Gerrell, Harold Gerrell, Lowell Gerrell; and sisters, Willene Knight and Nell Ivester.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, having proudly served his country in the Big Red 1 18th Infantry. Mr. Gerrell was retired after several years of service with Habersham County Medical Center. He enjoyed woodworking, tinkering with anything mechanical and he designed numerous homemade inventions. Mr. Gerrell also enjoyed fishing trips, planting vegetables in his garden, and playing horseshoes. Affectionately known as Grandpa/Pappy, his warm smile, quick wit and generous heart will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his children, Renae G. and Michael House of Demorest, Jeff and Shellie Gerrell of Cleveland; sisters, Mary Simmemon of Demorest, Annie Bell Wade of Alto; grandchildren, Natasha and Kasey McEntire of Demorest, Travis House of Demorest, and fiancé, Cassie Hansen of Clayton, Madison Gerrell, Malia Gerrell, Brayden Gerrell, Owen Gerrell, all of Cleveland; great-granddaughters, Payton McEntire, Rowan Hansen; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
