Mrs. Holmes died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, following a period of declining health.
Born Oct. 20, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Tierce and Felicia Machen. In addition to her parents, she also was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. E. Max Holmes.
Mrs. Holmes was a graduate of Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C., having received a Bachelor of Arts degree. She was a second-grade teacher in Greenville, S.C. In addition to being a homemaker, Mrs. Holmes was a member of Clarkesville Baptist Church, where she was very active in the Women’s Mission Union.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Martha H. and Daniel Tankersley of Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Ellen M. and Michael Irvin of Clarkesville; son and daughter-in-law, H. Max and Susan Holmes of Macon; grandson and wife, Lee D. and Lizzy Tankersley of Alpharetta; grandson and wife, Todd M. and Christie of Moyock, N.C.; granddaughter, Kelly I. Simmons of Toccoa; grandson, Walter H. Holmes of Macon; granddaughter, Stacie G. Holmes of Macon; and four great-grandchildren, Abby, Molly, Amber and Bradly.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28.
