Funeral services for John M. Huggins, 71, of the Batesville Community, Clarkesville, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 15, at Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Dotson and Steve Huggins officiating. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery with full military honors to be provided by the Georgia Military Honors Funeral Team.

Mr. Huggins died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, following a period of declining health.

Born Dec. 1, 1942, in Hoschton, he was the son of Naomi Huggins and the late Wade Huggins. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Jean Huggins; aunt, Nan Eby; grandmother, Julia Wooten; uncle, Ernest Wooten; and aunt, Florence Wooten.

He served in the United States Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis and Mr. Huggins was a retired firefighter for the City of Smyrna, with 24 years of loyal service. Mr. Huggins enjoyed fishing, gardening, spending time with his grandchildren, and camping.

Survivors include his mother, Naomi Huggins of Clarkesville; son, Alex Huggins of Clarkesville; daughter and son-in-law, Tangie and Keith Burks of Eastanollee; daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Monte Osborn of Tiger; granddaughter, Kelsie Burks, and grandson, Nicholas Burks of Eastanollee; and brothers, Horace Huggins and Steven Huggins, both of Clarkesville.
