Funeral services for John Neal Cornell, 81, of Cornelia, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Russ Barker officiating. Burial will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Georgia National Guard.

Mr. Cornell died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at The Oaks at Scenic View.

Born Jan. 24, 1933, in Parkspring, N.C., he was a son of the late John W. and Fannie Walker Cornell. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Lucy Beavers.

Mr. Cornell was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Demorest and enjoyed reading, gardening, woodworking and being involved with his grandchildren. He served his country proudly as a Seabee in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He also served a two-year tour in Bermuda.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Beatrice Mixon Cornell of Cornelia; sons, John Cornell Jr. of York, S.C., and Randy Cornell of Rockhill, S.C.; daughters, Sabrina Turner of Danville, Va., and Christie Cornell of Concord, N.C.; stepdaughter, Theresa Crawford of Denver, Colo.; sister, Mary Lea McCoy of Danville, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10-11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20.
