Joseph Eugene ‘Gene’ Glaze

Funeral services for Joseph Eugene “Gene” Glaze, 91, of Cleveland, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 16, at New Bridge Baptist Church of White County, with the Rev. Darin Cain, the Rev. Verner London and the Rev. Phillip Robinson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Glaze died July 14, 2012, at his home following an extended illness.

Born Dec. 1, 1920, in White County, he was the son of the late Joseph Eldridge Glaze and Sara Lou Wilda Winkler Glaze. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Mae Tomlin Glaze; son-in-law, William Cathey; siblings, Elbert Glaze, Ada Woods, Lester Glaze, Lonnie Glaze, Lillie Glaze, Willie Glaze, Gladys Aaron, Lillie House, Benjamin Hershel Satterfield, Viola S. White and Eunice Mae Glaze (who was only 1 year old).

Mr. Glaze was a Purple Heart recipient and World War II veteran, a member of New Bridge Baptist Church of White County since 1951, a deacon there since Sept. 23, 1962, and served as Sunday School Superintendent for more than 40 years.

He is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Jean Cathey of Cleveland; brother and sister-in-law, Thomas Jefferson and Charlie Mae Glaze of Cleveland; sister, Ethelene Bunch Herrington of Griffin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He only had one child, but was loved by more children than any grandparent could be, as well as the entire community, church family and caregivers. He was a carpenter by trade; however, he enjoyed gardening, fishing and playing the guitar.
