Funeral services for Ray Walter Porterfield, 61, of Mt. Airy, were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Trotter and the Rev. Kenneth Pilcher officiating. Burial followed in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Porterfield died Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Born July 20, 1952, in Clarke County, he was a son of the late Ernest and Doris Hill Porterfield. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Glenn Porterfield; brothers, William Douglas Porterfield, Allen Mark Porterfield; one stepgranddaughter; two stepgreat-grandsons; and a nephew, Darren Whitley.

Mr. Porterfield was a U.S. Army veteran and was of the Baptist faith.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time.

Survivors include wife, Peggy Porterfield of Mt. Airy; daughter, LaKeeta Porterfield of Demorest; stepdaughter, Sabrina Canup of Turnerville; stepson, Larry McMillian of Hartwell; stepdaughter, Tammy Renee Lance of Hayesville, N.C.; sisters, Diane Whitley of Arcade, Cindy Johnson of Mt. Airy, Kay Kennedy of Mt. Airy, Betty Jean Seabolt of Demorest and Pam Anderson of Cornelia; brothers, Ronald Ernest Porterfield of Clarkesville and Ernest Daniel Porterfield of Cornelia; granddaughter, Ka’Bren Porterfield; 12 stepgrandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
