Funeral services for Susan Vess Adams, 64, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, in the Lane Funeral Home, Ashland Terrace chapel, Chattanooga, Tenn., with the Rev. Robert Hartmans officiating. Burial will follow in Forrest Hills Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-noon at the funeral home.

Mrs. Adams died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at a nursing home in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late George D. Vess Jr. and Jean Thomas Vess.

Susan was a graduate of Chattanooga High School. She received an elementary education degree from Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn. Later, Susan received a master’s degree in elementary education, a second master’s degree in social studies from Georgia State University and a third master’s degree in library science from the University of Georgia.

Susan taught 25 years in Habersham County, where she was chosen as Habersham County Teacher of the Year in 1983. She was president of the Business Professional Women’s Club in 1985, secretary of the Alpha Delta Kappa teachers’ sorority and was a member of the Cornelia Three Arts Club. Susan was an excellent pianist and taught piano for many years from her home. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her former husband, Judge Steven C. Adams of Cornelia.

Survivors include her mother, Jean Thomas Vess of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; her sister and brother-in- law, Barbara and David Gibbs of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; her brother and sister-in-law, David and Deborah Vess of Chattanooga, Tenn.; her niece, Rebecca Susan (Gibbs) Foster of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; her niece, Jennifer Gibbs Thomas of Nashville, Tenn.; her nephew, Chauncey David Vess of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and her niece, Leslie Vess Mahoney of Chattanooga, Tenn. Susan also had a great-niece and several great-nephews.

Donations may be made to the Susan Adams Memorial at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 7514 Hixson Pike, Hixson, TN 37343, where she was a long-term member.
