Funeral services for Thomas Enoch Norton, 84, of Mt. Airy, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Clark and the Rev. Matthew Mote officiating. Burial followed in Community Baptist Cemetery.

Mr. Norton died Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at his residence.

Born May 21, 1929, in Franklin County, he was a son of the late Enoch Johnson and Queen Victoria Elizabeth Cobb Norton. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Mote Norton; sisters, Ruth Scott, Clara Reed and Frances Collins; and brothers-in-law, Frank Reed, Clyde Scott, Arnold Collins and Roy Laprade.

Mr. Norton was a self-employed farmer and was a member of Community Baptist Church, where he was a deacon for several years. He was also a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War and was a Purple Heart recipient. In his spare time, Mr. Norton loved his family and enjoyed gardening and going to church.

Survivors include his son, Tommy Norton of Mt. Airy; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Kay Norton of Mt. Airy; daughter, Glenda Norton of Mt. Airy; brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Karen Norton of Eastanollee; sister, Betty Laprade of Demorest; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
