Funeral services for Joel Darrell Hewell Sr., 67, of Alto, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Graylen Armour and the Rev. Jacob Armour officiating. Burial followed in Antioch Holiness Church Cemetery with full military honors provided by Grant Reeves VFW Post No. 7720, American Legion Post No. 84, Rabun County DAV Chapter No. 15 and the Georgia National Guard.

Mr. Hewell died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at his residence.

Born Nov. 2, 1945, in Clinton, S.C., he was a son of the late George F. and Eliza Marie Crumley Hewell. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hewell was also preceded in death by brothers, Daniel, David and Albert Hewell.

Mr. Hewell was a member and a deacon of Antioch Holiness Church. He was employed with Mt. Vernon Mills and was a brick and block mason. He was also a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Vietnam War. In his spare time, he enjoyed carving and collecting walking sticks and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Joel Darrell Jr. and Malena Hewell of Alto; grandchildren, Auston and MaKayla Hewell, both of Alto; stepson and wife, Jeff and Kathy Herrin of Cornelia; stepdaughter and husband, Kim and Keith Canup of Clarkesville; sisters, Geraldine Hulsey of Alto and Oneda Phagan of Lula; and brothers, Nelson Hewell of Alto and George Hewell of Mt. Airy;
