Funeral services for Grover Charles Roper, 86, of Clarkesville were scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, at Providence Baptist Church in Batesville with the Rev. Tommy Lawhorn and the Rev. Scott Doster officiating. Burial followed the service in the church cemetery.

Mr. Roper died Saturday, July 26, 2014, at his residence following a period of declining health.

Born Oct. 18, 1927, in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of the late Grover Charles and Rose Blackwell Roper. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude Roper; son, Charles Cleveland “Chuck” Roper; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Hugh Dorsey Roper and Joseph Roper; and sister Elsie Mitchell.

He was a farmer and retired bus driver for the Habersham County School System. Mr. Roper was a United States Navy veteran, a 60-year master Mason and a member of Clarkesville Masonic Lodge No. 325, F&AM. His hobbies included coaching Little League baseball and watching baseball, as well as working in his garden.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Wood Roper of Clarkesville; daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Gary Dameron of Woodstock; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Debbie Roper of Kennesaw; sister, Elvy Rita Mitchell of New Jersey; as well as seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
